Babe Ruth glove sells at auction for record $1.53 million

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The baseball glove worn by New York Yankee Babe Ruth was sold for $1,527,500 at the 19th annual Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory auction on Saturday.

Hunt Auctions said Ruth’s glove dates to his time with the Yankees circa 1927 to 1933.

“This monumental glove is truly [one] of the most historic pieces of its medium to have ever been offered at public auction,” David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, told MLB.com.

The company said Ruth gave the glove to Jimmy Austin, a longtime infielder with the St. Louis Browns, and that the mitt remained with Austin’s family. The auction house said it was the highest price ever paid for a glove, according to The Associated Press.

The previous record was $387,500 for a Lou Gehrig glove sold with Sotheby’s in 1999, according to ESPN.
