The Internal Revenue Service will give about a million taxpayers a surprise $1,400.

The IRS will distribute $2.4 billion to people who did not claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns, The Associated Press reported.

They were supposed to get a credit if they did not get one of the COVID stimulus payments or had less than the full amount. But the IRS said many of those who were eligible did not claim the credit.

“Looking at our internal data, we realized that one million taxpayers overlooked claiming this complex credit when they were actually eligible,” IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said in a news release.

The money will be either made by direct deposit or sent by check. Taxpayers don’t have to do anything to get the money that is owed to them. It will automatically be sent either by direct deposit this month or if a paper check, next month, the AP reported.

The maximum amount someone will get is $1,400 but they may get less. To see if you are eligible and how much you may get click here.

The IRS will also send a letter to taxpayers who are eligible to alert them of the payment.
