The St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park has been searching for two endangered Galapagos tortoises since they were stolen in December. They were found this week at the home of Joshua McCarty-Thomas in St Petersburg, and unfortunately one was found dead in a freezer. His wife, Dashae McCarty-Thomas, has also been arrested and charged. Police also found rare books and comic books that were also allegedly stolen. The tortoise that was found has already been returned to the farm in St Augustine.
It’s not especially unusual to see bears wandering around this time of year in Florida, but there is at least one that’s a little too close for comfort in Carrollwood, and another in Lutz. Security cameras caught the bear in the early morning hours of Monday, and Florida Fish and Wildlife thinks it may have come down from the areas of Ocala or Green Swamp. Make sure you have garbage cans secured to keep them away, and if you happen to see one, contact the FWC.

Floridians can save on supplies with the first of two disaster preparedness holidays coming up. It begins Saturday, May 27th and runs through Friday, June 9th. The second will be from August 26th through Sept. 8th. Check with the Florida Department of Revenue for supplies that are tax-free, and in the Dove Hurricane Guide for tips for staying safe before and after the storm.
Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay has received a $300,000 grant to continue repairs after Hurricane Ian and hire staff to assist residents with work already underway throughout the Bay area. Randy Scott, who has been known for years as the voice of the Florida Strawberry Festival, died in a crash with his wife Jill and fellow volunteer and Jill’s sister Judy Cook Monday in Manatee County. Florida Strawberry Festival President Kyle Robinson said they were all a big part of the festival and will be missed. The crash is under investigation.
